Occupational Therapy and Hand Specialty

An occupational therapist and hand therapist treats those who have an injury of the finger, hand or arm that is caused by accident, trauma, wounds, scars, cumulative trauma, amputation or fracture. Treatment involves post-operative rehabilitation, management of pain, sensory education and exercise programs. Custom splint fabrication is an important component in prevention and correction of injury. Training in daily life skills such as dressing, driving, eating are included. Treatment may include but may not be limited to the following:

• Manual therapy, including soft tissue mobilization, joint mobilization and myofascial release
• Exercise, including home exercise, controlled and protected range of motion
• Patient education
• Neuromuscular re-education
• Custom finger, hand, wrist and arm splinting
• Fluidotherapy

Vestibular Rehabilitation: Balance/Vertigo Disorders and Treatment

A physical therapist will assess the components of balance and equilibrium: visual motor skills, the vestibular/balance system of the inner ear, and the musculoskeletal system.  After determining the needs of the patient, individualized programs are designed which may include but are not limited to

• Habituation exercises
• Oculomotor/gaze stabilization exercises
• Gait training
• Balance retraining
• Strength and fitness exercises
• Home exercise

Pediatric

With children, physical therapy functions to facilitate normal movement patterns and inhibit abnormal tone by using purposeful play in evaluation and treatment of the child. Therapeutic play helps children develop and refine gross and fine motor skills, coordination, balance and movement patterns. Skills are emphasized allowing for progress toward age-appropriate activities. Family participation is encouraged for carryover into the home environment. Conditions that may benefit from therapy are:
